Masks are a hot topic in today’s coronavirus world. There are many to choose from, and they all offer different types of protection. In this article, we will be going over the different types of masks available on the market, which will hopefully provide a good basis on which one is right for you and your needs.
The Non-Medical Mask
These are your typical, fabric masks. They are great for everyday, however, they provide the least amount of protection. Keep in mind that any protection is better than no protection, however. These masks help slow the spread of COVID-19 when paired with other measures such as social distancing and hand washing. They are affordable and easy to find. The only downside is that these do need to be sanitised and washed after every use, so you cannot use one two days in a row unless you wash them.
The KN95 Mask
Moving up the food chain, these are less common in day to day life, and more common among medical professionals. However, contrary to popular belief, you can find them. In fact, we carry some on our site! These masks include a filter on them which helps remove particles from the air as you breathe them in. These masks are the right kind of masks how are effective at filtering out bacteria and viruses, and are instrumental in the fight against COVID-19. These are more effective than surgical masks, which have a looser fit on the face and do not filter out as many particles. While these are harder to find, we do recommend them. These also have a one time use only, meaning that using them more than once is not recommended for your own safety. Of course, you may find that you have to, as the world is facing a PPE shortage. Do it at your own discretion. However, we do sell these at an affordable price so it is worth buying more than one.
Respirators
These are perhaps the hardest to find, but offer the most protection. In heavily infected areas, these are the masks you will want to wear. These are reusable and protect from more than just coronavirus – many wear them in areas that are heavy in smoke, or are contaminated with chemicals, gases and other hazards. While these wouldn’t be our go to recommendations for the coronavirus, it is good to have one on hand for the many other threats Australia faces – including bush fires.
